What Is Pietersite? A Complete Guide to the Tempest Stone

Pietersite is a brecciated chatoyant quartz. That sentence is doing a lot of work, and unpacking it explains almost everything about why this stone looks the way it does, why there isn't much of it, and why lapidary artists keep coming back to it after thirty years.
We mine it. We've been pulling it out of the ground in Namibia and cutting it since long before it had a following online, and this guide is the version we'd give you if you were standing in our booth in Tucson holding a block up to the light.
The short answer
Pietersite is a quartz rock containing fibrous amphibole inclusions — crocidolite and riebeckite — that have been shattered, folded, and re-cemented before being replaced by silica. The fibers reflect light in a rolling, directional shimmer called chatoyancy. Because the fibers were broken up and scrambled before the quartz locked them in place, the shimmer doesn't sit in one flat band. It moves in patches, swirls, and streaks across the surface as you turn the stone. That effect is why it earned the nickname the Tempest Stone: it looks like a thunderstorm caught in cross-section.
Colors run storm blue through gold and bronze, cut with black matrix, and occasionally into red-brown. It sits at roughly 6.5–7 on the Mohs scale — hard enough to take a proper polish and wear well, soft enough to be worked with standard lapidary equipment.
Who found it, and where
Pietersite was discovered by Sid Pieters in Namibia in 1962, and the stone carries his name. The deposits sit near Outjo, in the Kunene region. Our operation is based at Swakopmund, on the coast.
Namibia is the original source — the place the stone was found and the place it was named for. It is not the only source. A deposit was discovered in Hunan Province, China, in 1993, and Chinese pietersite circulated in the market for years; that mine reportedly closed after flooding. If someone tells you Namibia is the world's sole source, they're overselling. What we will say, and what the trade broadly agrees on, is that Namibian material is better: more vivid blue, stronger contrast, greater hardness, and a cleaner take on polish. When people picture pietersite, they're picturing Namibian pietersite.
How it formed
The story runs in stages, and each one leaves a mark you can see in the finished stone.
- Fibers grow. Crocidolite — a fibrous blue amphibole — crystallizes in long, parallel bundles within the host rock. At this point it's essentially the same starting material that produces tiger's eye and hawk's eye.
- The rock gets broken. This is the step that makes pietersite pietersite. Tectonic activity fractures the fibrous rock and reworks it. The neat parallel bundles are snapped, bent, folded, and rotated. Geologists call the result a breccia: a rock made of angular fragments of an older rock.
- It gets cemented. Silica-bearing fluids move through the shattered zone and glue the fragments back together, locking every fiber bundle at whatever crazy angle it happened to land in.
- Quartz replaces the fiber. Over time silica replaces the amphibole, preserving the fibrous structure in a much harder, more durable quartz matrix. Where the iron in the original crocidolite oxidized, you get the golds and bronzes. Where it didn't, you keep the blue.
So a single hand-sized piece can contain fragments that were, geologically speaking, ripped apart and reassembled — the blue and gold sitting side by side because those two fragments had different oxidation histories before the quartz froze them into the same rock. That's not a marketing story. That's just what's in the stone.
Why it's rare
Rarity in gem material usually comes down to one of two things: the deposit is small, or the good part of the deposit is small. Pietersite has both problems.
The chatoyant, gem-grade material occurs in limited pockets and lenses within a much larger body of ordinary rock. Working a face doesn't produce a steady yield of AAA blue — it produces a lot of matrix, a lot of dull or fractured material, and occasional zones where the color and the fiber come together properly. Brecciation, the same process that creates the pattern, also introduces fractures and healed seams that can make material fall apart on the saw. Plenty of what comes out of the ground is beautiful and unusable.
The grade you buy isn't just about color. It's about how much of the piece survives the saw.
That's the honest reason pietersite prices sit where they do. You're paying for the sorting, not just the digging.
What it's used for
Pietersite is a cabbing and carving stone first. Its natural home is a domed cab where the curve lets the chatoyancy roll as the piece moves — a flat surface wastes half the effect. Beyond cabs:
- Carvings and sculpture. The 6.5–7 hardness and the chaotic banding suit freeform work. Carvers use the pattern as topography rather than fighting it.
- Jewelry. Hard enough for rings and pendants with sensible setting and normal care. Treat it as you would any quartz: no ultrasonics, no thermal shock.
- Spheres, eggs, and freeforms. A sphere is the most demanding test of the material, because it shows every direction of fiber at once.
- Display and collection. Some blocks are best left as blocks. Cutting them would break the pattern.

How pietersite is sold
Four formats cover essentially the whole market, and choosing between them is mostly a question of how much sorting you want to do yourself.
Rough by the kilogram
Unsawn material, sold by weight. You do your own windowing, your own orientation calls, and you accept the yield. This is where you find the best pieces and also the worst ones. Our rough pietersite runs $500/kg. If you cut a lot and trust your own eye, this is the efficient way to buy.
Slabs
Sawn to thickness, so the pattern is already visible and the fracture risk is largely known. You're paying for the saw work and, more importantly, for the certainty. Slabs suit cabbers who want to lay out a specific piece rather than gamble.
Polished blocks
Gallery-grade material, hand-cut and finished. These exist because some pieces are better as objects than as raw stock — the pattern reads best across the whole face. Our hand-cut polished blocks are $790. Collectors buy these; so do carvers who want to see exactly what they're working with before committing.
Tumbles
Finished, polished small stones sold by the bag. This is the volume end — retail, metaphysical, gifts, and grab bowls. Our tumble bags run $980/kg. Tumbling exposes chatoyancy on every face, which makes for a stone that performs well in the hand even at small sizes.
Grading, in plain terms
We grade to AA+ and AAA. What separates them, in practice: depth and saturation of the blue, the strength and mobility of the chatoyancy, contrast between the blue and gold zones, and structural integrity — how few healed fractures and voids the piece carries. Dead patches, chalky zones, and material that won't take a polish get culled before it ever reaches a listing.
