Let us start with the part most sellers leave out.

There is no standardized grading system for pietersite. No governing body defines the grades. No laboratory issues a pietersite grading certificate. When a dealer writes "AAA" on a listing, that is that dealer's opinion, expressed in a vocabulary they chose themselves.

Diamonds have the 4Cs because a large industry spent decades building an agreed-upon language, with labs to enforce it. Pietersite has nothing of the kind. It is a semi-precious material from a small number of deposits, cut by a relatively small number of people. The A/AA/AAA convention got borrowed from bead and cabochon wholesaling, where it has always been loose, and applied to pietersite because buyers found it convenient shorthand.

So "AA+" is not a measurement. It is a claim. The only question worth asking is what the person making it means by it, and whether their material backs it up.

Here is what we mean by it, and more usefully, how to judge pietersite for yourself so you never have to take anyone's letter grade at face value again.

Why the Grades Are Not Comparable Between Dealers

Two things make cross-dealer comparison close to meaningless:

  • Every dealer grades against their own inventory. A dealer whose best material is mediocre will still call their best material AAA — because relative to what they have, it is. The letter describes a position within one parcel, not a position within the world.
  • The scale keeps inflating. A grade only sells if it sounds like the top. So A became AA, AA became AAA, and now you see AAAA and "museum grade" and "collector grade." This is a marketing ratchet, not a refinement of standards.

The practical result: a AAA from one seller can be visibly weaker than a AA from another. If you are spending real money, the grade is the beginning of the conversation, not the end of it.

What We Mean by AA+

We mine near Outjo and cut at Swakopmund, so we grade against material we see fresh out of the ground and we grade before anybody else has picked it over. When we call something AA+ or AAA, we are saying it sits in the top band of what our own workings produce, judged on the criteria below.

That is an honest claim and a limited one. It says our material was sorted by people who cut this stone for a living and who see the whole spread, from rubble to the exceptional pieces. It does not say some authority ratified it. Nobody could.

What Actually Drives Quality

Forget the letters. These are the five things that decide whether a piece of pietersite is worth what is being asked for it. Learn to read these and you can grade any parcel, from any seller, yourself.

1. Strength and Movement of the Chatoyancy

This is first by a distance. Everything else is secondary.

Pietersite is brecciated — broken and re-cemented, so the fibrous amphibole inclusions run in many directions rather than the parallel bands you get in tiger's eye. That is what produces the storm effect. The quality question is how alive those fibers are.

Look for:

  • Strength. Does the sheen flare bright and sharply, or does it smolder faintly? Strong chatoyancy has an almost metallic snap to it.
  • Movement. Tilt the stone. Does the light roll — travel across the surface as a moving band — or does it just sit there and brighten slightly? Rolling is the whole appeal of this material.
  • Multiple domains that actually perform. Top pietersite has several fiber directions that each catch fire at different angles, so the stone keeps revealing new light as it moves. That is the "storm." A piece with one flat domain is not really doing the thing pietersite is famous for.

A photo cannot fully answer this. Video can. Ask for it.

2. Color Saturation and Contrast

The classic Namibian colors are storm blue and gold-bronze, often with black matrix, sometimes with red-brown. What separates good from great:

  • Saturation. A deep, dense blue with real depth is worth more than a grayed-out, washed blue. The same for gold — a rich bronze beats a muddy tan.
  • Contrast. Where blue meets gold meets black, sharp boundaries make the stone read dramatically. Colors that blur into each other produce a softer, less striking stone.
  • Interest of the color play. Blue-and-gold in the same piece, working against each other as the light moves, is generally more prized than a single-color stone — though a truly exceptional monochrome blue with violent chatoyancy will beat a mediocre multicolor every time.

Namibian material — the original source, discovered by Sid Pieters in 1962 and named for him — is widely regarded in the trade as the better of the world's pietersite for exactly this: more vivid color, and greater hardness. Pietersite has also been found in Hunan Province, China, from 1993; that deposit reportedly ceased production after flooding, and the material was generally considered softer and less vividly colored than Namibian. We think Namibian is better. We are not going to tell you it is the only.

3. Usable Proportion vs. Matrix and Fracture

This is the criterion buyers most often underweight, and it is the one that costs them money.

A piece can have magnificent color and flash across 30% of its surface and be crossed by seams everywhere else. If you are buying rough, that piece yields one small cab, not three. Ask:

  • How much of this is chatoyant, and how much is matrix? Black matrix contributes to the look, and some is desirable. But it weighs the same as the good material and you are paying by weight.
  • Where are the healed seams? Fractures crossing the live zones cap what you can make. Fractures at the edges cost you almost nothing.
  • Is the good part in one place or scattered? One large contiguous live zone is worth far more than the same total area broken into five patches.

4. Size

Large sound pieces are disproportionately rarer than small ones, because the odds of a piece being free of a disruptive seam fall off as it gets bigger. That is a straightforward consequence of brecciation: this is a stone that was broken before you got to it.

Which is why a big cab with clean chatoyancy across the whole face commands what it does. It is not a linear scale. Doubling the face size does far more than double the difficulty of finding the material.

5. Polish Take

Pietersite runs roughly 6.5–7 Mohs, but that is an average across a stone that mixes quartz-cemented breccia with softer amphibole-rich zones and matrix. That hardness variation is why some pietersite polishes to a genuine mirror and some fights you and undercuts along every seam.

Material that takes a clean, deep polish without pitting is meaningfully better material — it means the cementation is sound and the inclusions are well integrated. If you are buying finished blocks or cabs, look at the polish under a hard light: pitting, dishing at the seams and orange-peel texture all tell you about the material, not just the cutter.

How to Judge for Yourself

A short checklist you can apply to any listing, ours included:

  • Demand to see it move. One static photo of pietersite tells you about pattern. Only movement tells you about chatoyancy, and chatoyancy is what you are buying.
  • Assume wet photos flatter. Water hides fine fractures and makes soft zones look integrated. Expect wet photos — you cannot assess the stone without them — but ask for dry shots of fracture faces too.
  • Ask what the grade means to that seller. A seller who can explain their criteria without getting defensive is telling you something. A seller who cannot is telling you something too.
  • Mentally deduct the matrix and the seams, then ask what the remaining live material costs per gram. That is the real price.
  • Ask who graded it and where in the chain. Material graded at the mine has not been picked over. Material graded at the fifth link in the chain has been picked over four times, and its "AAA" is AAA of what was left.

Where We Stand

We are not going to pretend our AA+ is a certified anything, because no such certification exists for this stone and anyone implying otherwise is selling you a story. What we can tell you is that it is graded by the people who dig it and cut it, before anyone else has had a chance to take the good pieces out, and that we have shown this material at G&LW in Tucson for around thirty years to a customer base that mostly buys from us again.

Judge the material, not the letters. Look at our hand-cut polished blocks and our rough by the kilo against the five criteria above — and against anything else you are considering. That comparison is the point. If we did not think our material held up to it, we would not be inviting you to make it.
