How to Cut and Cab Pietersite

Pietersite is not difficult because it is hard. At roughly 6.5–7 on the Mohs scale it sits right where agate and jasper sit, and your equipment will handle it without complaint. Pietersite is difficult because it is brecciated — broken apart by geology and re-cemented — and that changes everything about how you approach a piece.

Tiger's eye has parallel fibers. You orient it once, cut across the fiber, and the eye comes up where you expect it. Pietersite's fibers run in a dozen directions inside a single slab, separated by seams of matrix and healed fracture. That is where the storm comes from. It is also where your headaches come from. The two are the same feature.

We mine this material near Outjo and cut it ourselves at Swakopmund, and we have made every mistake described below. Here is what we have learned.

Start With the Rough Wet

Before a blade touches anything, wet the rough and study it under a single directional light. Not a light box, not diffuse daylight — one source you can move.

Chatoyancy only reveals itself as the light moves relative to the fiber. Roll the piece slowly, or move the lamp slowly, and watch where the sheen wakes up and where it dies. On a good piece of Namibian rough you will see two or three distinct fiber domains flashing at different angles, and dead zones between them. Map them. That map decides your cut.

Wet the surface again as it dries out. Water mimics polish, roughly. It will flatter the stone — more on that below — but it tells you where the light lives.

Orientation Is the Whole Game

Everything else in this article is craft. This part is the game.

Chatoyancy rolls perpendicular to the fiber direction. You want your finished dome oriented so that the strongest fiber domain sits roughly parallel to the surface of the cab, which puts the roll across the face where a viewer will see it. Cut so the fiber runs steeply into the stone and the light disappears into the depth — you get a dull cab from beautiful rough, and you will not know why until you cut the offcut the other way.

In practice this means:

  • Pick one domain and commit. A slab with three fiber directions cannot serve all three. Decide which flash is your hero, orient for it, and accept the others as background.
  • Mark the rough before you saw. An aluminum scribe or a fine marker on the dry surface. Draw the fiber direction, draw your intended saw plane, and draw an arrow for "up." You will lose the read the moment the piece is wet, sludgy and sitting in a vise.
  • Cut a test slab first. On expensive material, one thin exploratory cut through the least promising end tells you more than an hour of squinting. Wet the cut face and read it.
The single most common way to waste good pietersite is to saw it the convenient way instead of the correct way. The convenient plane is the flat one. The correct plane is the one your fiber map tells you.

Sawing

Slab with a sharp blade and take it slowly. Brecciated material has healed seams that are weaker than the surrounding quartz, and a blade that is pushing rather than cutting will find those seams and pop the slab apart along them. That is not always a disaster — sometimes the stone is telling you where it was going to fail anyway — but it should be your choice, not the saw's.

Keep slabs a little thicker than you would for agate. Pietersite rewards a taller dome, and you want material to spare when you find a pocket at the eleventh hour. Cutting thin to save weight is a false economy on a stone this good.

Read the Slab Before You Trim

Wet the slab and read it again, properly, before you draw a single preform outline. What you are looking for:

  • Where the flash sits. Center your outline on the live zone, not on the prettiest static pattern. A cab is a moving object in the hand. Pattern is decoration; the roll is the point.
  • Seams crossing the outline. A seam through the middle of a cab is a crack waiting for a bezel setting to find it, and it will very likely undercut at polish.
  • Soft inclusions. Duller, more matte-looking patches that stay dull when everything around them lights up. These are the ones that will dish out.

Then draw around the problems. You will get a smaller cab. Take the smaller cab.

Dome It Properly

Dome height is not a style choice in pietersite. It is optical engineering.

A flat cab shows you one narrow band of the fiber at one angle. A generous dome presents the fiber to the light across a whole range of angles at once, so the sheen gathers, lifts, and rolls as the stone tilts. The chatoyancy you saw in the wet slab only fully arrives when you give it curvature to travel across. Cut a shallow cab and you will spend the rest of the day wondering where the storm went.

Go higher than feels necessary. Symmetry of the dome matters too — an uneven dome makes the roll stutter instead of sweep.

Grinding, Sanding, Polish

Standard cabbing progression works: coarse shaping wheel, then step down through your sanding wheels in order, never skipping a step, until the surface shows no scratches from the previous grit under wet inspection. Nothing exotic here. What is different is discipline.

Because pietersite mixes hardnesses — quartz-cemented breccia against softer amphibole-rich zones and matrix — every stage removes material unevenly. Skipping a grit on agate costs you a few scratches. Skipping a grit on pietersite means the softer zones get chewed while you chase scratches on the hard zones, and you dig a pocket you cannot get back out of.

Practical rules:

  • Light pressure, more time. Pressure is what causes differential wear. Let the wheel work.
  • Inspect wet at every step. Dry inspection lies about scratches and lies about undercutting.
  • Keep the stone moving. Dwelling in one spot on a mixed-hardness stone is exactly how a soft seam becomes a trench.
  • Stop chasing at the end. If a small pit refuses to come out at final polish, going back and re-cutting the dome to remove it usually costs more than the pit does. Know when to stop.

For final polish, most cabbers get good results on pietersite with cerium or aluminum oxide on leather or felt. The stone will take a genuine mirror when it is sound, and a good polish is where the depth in the blue really opens up.

Undercutting and Pockets: The Honest Version

You will get undercutting. Everyone does. The seams between breccia clasts and the softer inclusion zones will always sand faster than the quartz around them, and there is no technique that eliminates this — only technique that minimizes it.

What helps: lighter pressure, harder backing under your sanding surface (soft-backed wheels conform to the low spots and deepen them), and choosing the outline so the worst seams fall outside the finished cab. What does not help: more pressure, more time on one spot, or hope.

Do not fight a bad seam. If a seam is opening up at 600, it will still be there at final polish, and it will be deeper. Re-preform around it or move on. The rough is expensive but it is cheaper than four hours you cannot bill.

This Is Not Beginner Material

We would rather say this plainly than sell you rough you will be unhappy with. If you have cut fewer than a couple of dozen cabs, cut agate first. Pietersite punishes exactly the habits beginners have — heavy pressure, impatience, skipped grits, and cutting the convenient plane instead of the right one. The material is not forgiving and it is not cheap.

If you have got the hours in, though, there is very little else like it on a wheel. Namibian pietersite — the original material, discovered by Sid Pieters in 1962 and still regarded in the trade as the better of the world's sources for color and hardness — will give you a finished stone that moves like weather. That is worth the trouble.
