Buying Rough Pietersite by the Kilo: What to Expect
A kilo of pietersite rough is about the weight of a bag of sugar and costs more than most people spend on a saw blade in a year. Before you commit to that, it is worth knowing exactly what arrives in the box and what survives the journey to a finished cab.
We mine this material in the Kunene region and process it at Swakopmund, so we see every stage of that loss — from what comes out of the ground, to what makes a slab, to what makes a stone worth setting. Here is the honest version.
What a Kilo Actually Looks Like
Depending on how the material breaks, a kilo is typically a handful of fist-sized and palm-sized pieces rather than a heap of small ones. That matters more than the number suggests, because piece size drives what you can make. A kilo in three chunky pieces gives you real freedom to orient. A kilo in fifteen thumb-sized fragments gives you fifteen forced decisions and a lot of small cabs.
Pietersite rough does not look like much dry. It comes out dusty, often with a weathered rind, and the storm blue reads closer to gray-black until it is wet or cut. If you have only seen finished pietersite, the rough will look underwhelming in your hand for about ten minutes, until you put water on it.
Yield: The Part Nobody Wants to Say Out Loud
Rough to finished cab loses a lot. Not some. A lot.
There are three separate reductions stacked on top of each other, and they compound:
- Rough to slab. You lose the weathered rind, the blade kerf on every cut, and any end pieces too thin or too fractured to use. You also lose material to orientation — the correct saw plane for the fiber often is not the plane that yields the most square inches.
- Slab to preform. This is where the honest cutting happens. You draw around seams, around dead zones with no chatoyancy, around soft inclusions. On brecciated material, plenty of a given slab is structurally fine but optically dull, and dull pietersite is just rock.
- Preform to finished stone. Doming eats depth, and a proper pietersite dome is taller than you would cut in agate. Then there is the piece that opens a pocket at the sanding stage and gets recut smaller, or set aside.
We are not going to quote you a yield percentage, because the honest answer is that it swings wildly with the piece, the fiber map, and what you are making. A cutter chasing one exceptional 40mm freeform out of a kilo will "waste" most of it and be delighted. A cutter making a run of small calibrated ovals will use far more of the same kilo and get less drama per stone.
Plan on the finished weight being a small fraction of what you buy. If your project math only works at high yield, pietersite is the wrong stone for that project.
This is not pietersite being unusually bad. It is what happens to every chatoyant, fractured, orientation-dependent material. It is just more honest to say so before you buy than after.
How to Judge Rough Before You Buy
You are almost always buying from photos. So learn to read photos.
- Look for the flash, not the pattern. Static color tells you very little. What you want is evidence that the fiber is alive — a sheen that clearly shifts across the surface, ideally shown at more than one angle or in a video. Pattern without chatoyancy is a rock that happens to be blue.
- Count the fiber domains. More domains means more optical drama but harder orientation decisions. Fewer, larger domains are easier to cut and often produce cleaner cabs.
- Look at the fracture surfaces. Natural break faces tell you how sound the piece is. Lots of iron-stained healed seams crossing the piece in every direction means small preforms.
- Judge the proportion of matrix. Black matrix is part of what makes pietersite look like a storm, and some of it is desirable. But you are paying by weight, and matrix weighs the same as chatoyant material.
- Check that scale is shown. A photo with no ruler or coin in frame is not information.
Why Wet Photos Matter — and Why They Flatter
Any honest seller shows pietersite wet, because water approximates what polish does: it fills the surface microtexture and lets you see into the stone instead of at it. Without water you cannot assess chatoyancy in rough at all. Dry photos of rough pietersite are close to useless.
But wet photos flatter, and you should know exactly how:
- Water hides fine fractures and healed seams that will show up plainly on a slab.
- Water makes soft, matte inclusion zones look glossier and more integrated than they are — those are the zones that will undercut.
- Water plus a hard directional light can make a modest sheen look spectacular from precisely one camera angle.
None of this is deception. It is just optics. The fix is simple: expect wet photos, but also ask for dry shots of the fracture faces, and ask for video if you want to know whether the chatoyancy really rolls or just sits there in one frame. We will send both.
What "Expertly Processed" Should Mean
It is a phrase that gets used loosely. When we use it, it means specific things happened to your kilo before it was weighed:
- Sorted. Rough is graded and separated at the mine, so a kilo of our AA+ material is not a kilo of everything that came off the same screen.
- Trimmed. Dead waste, heavy rind and obviously unusable rubble are removed before weighing. You are paying for material you have a genuine chance of cutting, not for ballast.
- Read. Pieces are broken and sized with the fiber in mind, not just to hit a weight.
That last point is worth more than it sounds. Rough that has been sized by someone who does not cut the stone will often be broken across exactly the plane that destroys the best orientation option.
Mine-Direct Pricing vs. the Middleman
Our rough runs $500 per kilo. That number does two things at once: it is high compared to most cabbing rough, and it is low compared to what the same graded Namibian material costs by the time it has passed through a chain of hands.
The chain is usually mine, to local buyer, to exporter, to wholesaler, to dealer, to you. Every link takes a margin, and — more importantly — every link takes the best pieces out first. By the time a parcel reaches the end of that chain, it has been picked over several times. The price went up at each step and the average quality went down. You pay more for less because that is arithmetic, not because anyone did anything wrong.
Buying direct from the mine removes the links. We dig it, we grade it, we sell it. What is left is what we have not already cut ourselves, which is a useful thing to know about a seller who also cuts.

Shipping and Customs From Namibia
We ship worldwide, and stone is a straightforward thing to ship — it does not spoil and it does not care about temperature. Two practical notes:
- It is heavy. A kilo of rock plus protective packing is not a letter. Shipping is a real line item on an order this size, and combining orders is usually cheaper than splitting them.
- Duties and import charges are the buyer's responsibility, and they vary by country. We are not going to guess at your customs rules from here. Check your own country's thresholds for mineral specimens and rough gem material before you order — a two-minute check now beats a surprise invoice at delivery.
